Maria Esperanza Flores Rios of California was expecting twins, she just wasn’t expecting them so soon. She probably also never expected they would be born in two different years. She gave birth to her twin babies, well one of them, on New Year’s Eve. The second came 18 minutes later, on New Year’s Day.

Check the sweet Twitter announcement from evening news anchor for Channel 23, ABC News Bakersfield, Jessica Harrington:

According to this ABC report, the twins, born at Delano Regional Medical Center, came 3 weeks early. Flores Rios gave birth to baby boy, Joaquin, just two minutes before midnight on December 31st, and then came a baby girl, Aitana, at 12:16 a.m. on January 1st. Aitana may have come second, but she was named the first baby born to the hospital in 2018.

This special title reportedly earned the family $3,000 in baby supplies, as is the hospital’s tradition. The doctor who delivered the babies said this was the first time he has delivered twin babies in two different years in his entire 30 plus years of practicing obstetrics.
