3 glorious ways to lie on your stomach while pregnant

I missed a lot of things when I was pregnant. Sushi, for sure. Margaritas. Running (a lot of people continue running, but my belly got so big and uncomfortable I switched to walking). But there was one thing no one warned me I’d miss. I wanted it so bad, it was an actual physical ache. I dreamed about it.

I desperately wanted to sleep on my stomach.

A good, hard, flop-on-the-bed, smash-your-face-in-the-pillow-and-pass-out-like-an-exhausted-toddler sleep. Oh, yessssss!

After talking to my pregnant friends, I  tried a few ways to lie on my belly and it was exactly the bliss I imagined it would be. These aren’t intended as suggestions for a full night’s sleep…the safest position for that is on your side. But try them out for a few beautiful moments of relief during the day.

1. Go to a beach and dig a hole for your bump. Lie in it.

Depending on where you are right now (sorry, East coasters!), this may have to wait a while. On the other hand, it’s one of the only reasons to appreciate being pregnant in the summer. Find a beach — lake, ocean, doesn’t matter as long as there’s some sand — and dig yourself a belly hole. Spread out your towel and enjoy a few moments in the sun. On your stomach.

2. Book a pregnancy massage.

I’m not a massage person. I’ve gotten two in my whole life, and both were for my birthday during different pregnancies. It was soooo worth it. I’d have paid that money just to lie on my stomach on the massage table and then go home. I love the idea of gifting a massage to a mom-to-be at a baby shower, or if — like me — they have a birthday while they’re pregnant. You could also make it one last treat to yourself before your baby comes.

3. Try The Cozy Bump maternity pillow.

Inspired by air mattresses and inner tubes, The Cozy Bump inflatable bed lets you lie on your stomach wherever you set it up. We actually featured the Cozy Bump here on BabyCenter a few years ago, before it hit the market, but now it’s available on Amazon, ready to fulfill all your stomach-sleeping desires. (Cozy Bump Maternity Pillow; Amazon, $74.99)
